The Grizzlies have fired Iavaroni after a lackluster 11-30 start. Team spokesman Dustin Krugel confirmed Iavaroni's dismissal Thursday night, Jan. 22, 2009, but would not say who would coach the Grizzlies on Friday night against the Knicks. General manager Chris Wallace was traveling to New York.

Vonn leads as downhill training finally starts (AP)

Overall World Cup leader Lindsey Vonn led a World Cup downhill training session Friday after three days of cancellations because of fog and snow. Vonn posted her first podium finish on the Olympia delle Tofane course in 2004 and won the prestigious downhill last year. She has five top-three finishes overall on the course.

Ivanovic ousted from Australian Open (AP)

Ana Ivanovic’s hopes of a return trip to the Australian Open final fell apart in a barrage of mistakes Friday as Russia’s Alisa Kleybanova ousted the 2008 runner-up with a 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-2 victory in the third round. With the 19-year-old Kleybanova constantly aggressive, fifth-ranked Ivanovic lost her serve nine times and finished with 50 unforced errors to just 23 winners.

Ricketts family to buy Cubs for $900M (AP)

The billionaire Ricketts family has been selected by Tribune Co. as the winning bidder for the Cubs. The bid is worth about $900 million, said Dennis Culloton, a spokesman for Tom Ricketts. The sale would include Wrigley Field and a 25 percent interest in a regional sports network.

Tom Ricketts once lived across the street from Wrigley Field and met his wife in the bleachers. Now that his billionaire family is set to purchase the Chicago Cubs and their historic ballpark from Tribune Co., he’s about to get a closer view of his favorite team. And, maybe, he can help them win their first championship since 1908.
